Spring/Summer 2022 goes to the dark side, with deep lip colors and impactful eyes given a glossy makeover. Here’s your guide to the season’s emerging trends.
Polished pout
Spring/Summer 2022 lip looks have transitioned from matte to gloss, in shades of rouge, oxblood and plum. Pat McGrath suggests using liquid gloss over liquid lipstick to add shine, tissuing in-between each layer.
Overruled
Modern eyeliner stays the course for the new season, with graphic lines enhancing winged liner looks. At Koche, lion-liner mimicked the darkened inner angles of the big cat, while Dior showed double black kohl lines sandwiching a flicker of white, and Valentino played up negative spaces.

Wet ahead
Dewy finishes stand out for summer. “It’s my new favorite way to get a fresh-faced look,” says Huda Kattan. Makeup artists at David Koma used light-reflecting face gloss to achieve this look.

Oversized shapes structure to the classic smoky eye. Build a charcoal pigment into an exaggerated cat-eye, as seen at Rick Owens, or blend rich cocoa eyeshadow into the socket to recreate Altuzarra’s flattering contour effect.
