The Spring/Summer 2022 season celebrates all things creative, with intense eyes, bursts of hypercolor, and exaggerated, textured hair. Read on for all the makeup and hair trends to keep up with.
Stain to See
Update a deep red lip with neutral skin texture, a natural eye look, and barely-there mascara for a relaxed vibe. Press the lip color into the skin for a fresh stain finish.
Color Clash
Blue and green eyeshadow broke the rules at Versace, with the two-tone look one of the most memorable of the season. Replicate by using bold pigments applied with a damp brush – too much blending will age this strong look back to the 80s.
Shimmer Shimmy
Spring’s fresh palette of blush pink, violet, terracotta, and sage, has been given a touch of frost with shimmery highlights, as seen at Anna Sui and Osman Uousefzada. Opt for glimmering sand hues to add warmth to the inner corners of the eyes.
Return to Joy
Designers took a lighthearted approach with rainbows springing across eyes at Paul & Joe, sequined lips at Acne Studios, and bright bobs for Loewe. Choose happiness with a dash of unexpected color added to a neutral day look.
Color Catcher
Freehand-blending neon pink created an aerosol effect at Prabal Gurung. Chloé co-opted the dayglo look for an extended wing and eyeliner in tropical peach, with Rochas taking the same shade one step further, underlining models’ cheekbones.
Clip ‘n’ Keep
90s style barrettes were given a sparkly glow-up, sweeping hair back at Tom Ford and Simone Rocha. Choose a classic bar shaped in silver or gold plating – plus diamanté – to keep the look modern.
Out of this world
Taking a detour to the surreal, Luar, Etro, Private Policy, and Mark Fast gave an otherworldly hint to their beauty looks. Add an intergalactic sheen to skin by mixing a silvery luminizer to liquid foundation or try an alien element like deep indigo lips for a bold evening look.
Out of line
Classic black kohl went offbeat with expressive shapes. Christian Dior chose a chic double-pronged wing, while Givenchy got creative with exaggerated lash outlines. Meet in the middle with Valentino’s modern demi-wing.
Straight ahead
Hair was extra-long and super straight at Chanel and Versace, with volume espoused in favor of silky-smooth lengths. Get the look by using a smoothing treatment on towel-dried hair and while heat-straightening.
What are the biggest Spring/Summer 2022 beauty trends according to the experts?
Huda Kattan: “In the past, makeup was all about hiding and covering up imperfections, but now it’s going to a place that’s all about self-expression and doing something just for you.”
Ilham Mestour, Keune global artistic director: “We’re going to see more natural hair fluffed out and allowed to do its own thing. The key is to have just the right amount of texture to give the style a relaxed, cool-girl feel.”
Vimi Joshi, celebrity makeup artist: “Liner is back with a vengeance, as seen on Angelina Jolie and Julia Fox. I love the new Rare Beauty Perfect Strokes Matte Eyeliner. The calligraphy brush tip glides across the eyes so easily and effortlessly for the perfect flick.”
Chris Schild, celebrity makeup artist: “I love the confidence in punk-inspired looks at Rick Owens, Marni, and Missoni this season – create this rebelliously bold graphic eye using a black eyeliner pen for super easy application.”
