Selena Gomez has recently opened up about her kidney transplant, and resulting scar, in a powerful Instagram post about body confidence.
The photo featured the actor and singer wearing a blue swimsuit, poised with her right leg raised, revealing her scar from her kidney transplant surgery in 2017. The post represents Gomez’s journey of accepting and feeling confident in her body. Posing in a swimsuit by newly-launched brand La’Mariette, Gomez captioned the post, “When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through…and I’m proud of that. T – Congratulations on what you’re doing for women, launching @lamariette whose message is just that…all bodies are beautiful.”
The American star revealed in 2017 that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to being diagnosed with lupus in 2015, and had received the organ from close friend Francia Raisaas.
Gomez, who recently launched her own makeup line Rare Beauty, has been very public with her health journey, both physically and mentally, over the last year. Earlier this year she spoke to Amy Schumer for Interview magazine explaining how sharing her personal journey, and being a health advocate, has helped others, “I don’t know if that was ever meant to be my role, but I love people,” she said. “I care, a lot. I’ve gone through a lot of medical issues, and I know that I can reach people who are going through similarly scary things—an organ transplant, or being on dialysis, or going away for treatment. A huge part of why I have a platform is to help people. That’s why I think I’m okay with the magnitude. I mean, I’m not really okay with it—but I’m going to say that I am because it’s worth it. I know that I’m making someone somewhere feel good, or feel understood or heard, and that’s worth it for me.”
