Here’s How to Recreate Lara Scandar’s Voluminous Hairstyle from El Tabour

Egyptian singer Lara Scandar recently surprised her fans with the release of her new music video for El Tabour. Scandar serves up 1950s-style glamour while channeling her resemblance to Egyptian-born French singer Dalida. In the music video, the songstress is dressed in a glimmering black evening number from the Lebanese couture label Azzi & Osta, while sporting equally shimmery eye makeup in bright pink. However, fans were quick to swoon over the singer’s voluminous mane, coiffed in big waves in keeping with the 1950s vibe of the music video.

We caught up with Catherine Hawkes, the Hair Artistic Director at Tips & Toes to find out the best way to recreate the look. “Achieving this look is going to be very similar to an old fashioned 1950s roller set,” says Hawkes.

1. Firstly, the hair needs to be washed and then using a strong setting lotion or volumizing mousse such as Schwarzkopf Mousse Strong Hold, combed all the way through. Make sure the hair is fully coated.

2. Then, you blow-dry the front section of hair at the top with a very small round brush. This should leave you with a really curly, gorgeous section of hair. Next, grab a roller and pin it up. You then repeat this all the way down to the center of your hair — almost leaving you with a sort of mohawk of rollers.

3. Now once that has completely cooled, you take out all of the rollers really gently. Then taking a soft-bristled brush, you start brushing it through, which would leave you with a big, vibrant curly mass. As you brush through it, it will be less curly and extremely voluminous. From here on, it’s all about how you want to style it.

4. Take your first front section — quite a big chunk (more hair than what you took with the rollers). With this section, you start backcombing. Try and do this as close to the roots as you can to create as much volume as possible. Then you need to sculpt it around your face, leaving the curl almost tucked in. If the hair is too long, you can always roll up the ends and pin it to the hair. This is something we are seeing quite a lot at the moment with celebrities who don’t want to commit to cutting their hair but want to try a new, fun hairstyle.

5. Finally, repeat this all through your hair, to create the desired shape. Your last step, when your hair is perfectly styled is to give it a good spray with some hair spray — I love the Oribe superfine strong hairspray. Then you’re good to go!
