How to Nail the ‘No Manicure’ Manicure

“Natural nails can still be beautiful,” says Tony Cuccio, the man behind nail brand Cuccio Naturalé. But taking a break from nail polish doesn’t necessarily mean it’s less maintenance. “Going bare actually requires more effort,” says Cuccio. “The hands have to be groomed. A polish manicure can easily camouflage imperfections, but when your nails are natural you must ensure they always look clean and healthy.”

This means trips to the nail salon to get cuticles pushed back and hydrated. The simplest trick to pulling off bare nails from the comfort of your couch, he says, is to invest in a buffer. Shiny, ultra-glossy nails, which were all over the recent Spring 2017 ready-to-wear runways, as well as the runways of Burberry, Givenchy, and Stella McCartney, give just the right amount of natural.

“Buffing is a natural way to look after nails, and it leaves a healthy shine,” Cuccio says. A four-sided nail buffer is a beauty must-have. Start with the side marked 1, which gently exfoliates the surface of your nail bed, and work your way through to side 4, to create high-impact shine. Follow with a nourishing oil to soften the cuticles and keep them hydrated. “Grape seed oil is ideal for the hot Middle Eastern summers,” he says. “It works effectively to seal moisture in the skin.”
