In 1994, a hopeful makeup artist named François Nars set off from Paris to New York to launch a minimalist brand at Barneys with just twelve lipsticks. Fast forward to today: Nars has cemented himself as an icon, inspiring generations of countless beauty aficionados with his striking runway looks and photographs. In his latest endeavor, the legendary makeup artist will be launching the first Nars boutique in the Middle East in January 2017. Nars’ entire lineup of iconic lipsticks (including Roman Holiday, Schiap, Jungle Red), blushes, and palettes will be neatly arranged on display for the highly-anticipated January opening in Dubai, UAE.
Here, a collection of beauty lessons we learned from the makeup artist during his recent sit-down with Vogue Arabia.
1. Always be yourself
“I don’t like to speak to trends. I think it is best to find out what works for you.”
2. Makeup brushes are very important
“You cannot achieve good makeup without good tools.”
3. A tube of lipstick has undeniable transformative powers
“I have a real love affair with lipstick. It has such a strong impact on the face. You feel immediately elegant and chic and it gives the face a lot of strength.”
4. You don’t have to commit
“Go for a strong lip and try sharp, strong colors on the eyes. And, if you don’t like it, take it off and try something else. Makeup is not a commitment!”
5. Makeup is an accessory
“Makeup should be thought of in the same way as a wardrobe. It is an accessory.”
