Myriam Fares Shuts Down Cancer Rumors

Shortly after Elissa unveiled the video for her latest single, “Ila Kol Elli Bihebbouni,” on August 7, in which she revealed her battle with breast cancer, rumors began to swirl around the internet that another Lebanese singer was fighting the devastating illness. Following several concert cancellations, a number of media outlets published claims that Myriam Fares was also battling cancer, leaving fans shocked. However, the pop star was quick to shut down the rumors, releasing a heartfelt note to her 11.4 million Instagram followers in Arabic stating that while she is suffering from an illness, it’s not cancer. In her letter, the singer said she was hesitant to speak up on her sickness, but had decided to break her silence following the outpour of support from concerned fans. “I’ll need some time to heal and come back strong as you know me. Not every disaster is called cancer. Stop commercializing people’s health,” she said in the statement. The singer went on to thank her fans from “the bottom of her heart” for their support, writing that she was “blessed.”

In the wake of the rumors, stars of the Arab world sent messages of love and support, including Nancy Ajram and Ahlam. The Emirati singer wrote on Twitter: “I pray for your wellness,” and asked her fans to “Pray for Myriam Fares, for she is suffering from a sickness.” Meanwhile, Ajram expressed her concern for the new mother. “Myriam is so young and the mother of a small child. I pray that God heals her so that she may return to her family,” she said in a recent interview. We wish the singer a speedy recovery.
