As if there wasn’t enough hype around the Balmain show already, the news that Kylie Jenner and designer Olivier Rousteing would debut their new makeup collaboration during the French fashion house’s Spring 2020 presentation certainly upped the ante. Though Jenner announced earlier this week that she had to cancel her trip to Paris Fashion Week due to an undisclosed illness, there was still a colossal paparazzi mob outside of the Palais Garnier ahead of the show.
Backstage, Kylie x Balmain gift bags were lined up neatly as each member of this season’s Balmain army—including Tami Williams, Nataliya Bulycheva, and Issa Alien—found themselves among the first to test-drive the hotly anticipated offerings. For the show, Rousteing and Jenner conceptualized two kinds of graphic eyes: The first a bold, metallic silver wing, and the other a watercolor smoky eye, riffing on Jenner’s look in the Instagram-breaking campaign. “It’s very Olivier, very Kylie,” smiled makeup artist Samira Goyette, her waist cinched by a metal hardware belt embedded with eyeshadows from the collection, designed by Rousteing.
To achieve the diffused pastel gazes, Goyette blended the Kyshadow Palette’s mint green City of Love, warm rose Top Model, and peachy fuchsia Close the Show shades onto the lids and dabbed metallic silver Model Type on the inner corners for a “pop when they open their eyes,” she explained. Goyette complemented the shimmering swoops and soft-focus pastel gazes with luminous skin, sculpted rosy cheeks, and slicks of sparkling nude pink Paris Matte Liquid Lipstick on the mouth. In combination with the show’s individual hairstyles crafted by hairstylist Sam McKnight, from swooped “lived-in” waves to streamlined vertical braids, the overall effect was Balmain-girl toughness meets charming, soft appeal.
