Nowadays, fawning over Hailey Bieber’s skin is practically a daily pastime for the Insta crowd – it’s radiant, dewy and it genuinely looks lit from within. How does she do that? In addition to a carefully considered skincare routine, her makeup artist Mary Phillips knows a thing or two about creating a fresh-meets-flawless complexion. “My clients request all different types of makeup looks,” she says. “And although their requests vary, the one consistent request is fresh, hydrated and natural-looking skin.” Here, she shares her key tips on how to create that with Vogue.

1. Start with hydration

“To me, a modern complexion is fresh and flawless-looking skin that is lightly matte on the T-zone but still glowing at the high points of the face. It starts with healthy, hydrated skin. Following a skincare regimen and doing routine skin maintenance is always beneficial – knowing what works best for your skin and using the right products and tools for application is also key. The products I use to enhance my own complexion are primer, foundation, concealer, powder, bronzer, blush and highlighter.”

2. Primer really does work

Primer helps enhance the look of the makeup you apply, and ensures it lasts all day. I love an overall flawless, smooth complexion and to achieve that, start with base products: primer, foundation and concealer. A primer that can ensure this smooth base has staying power is key and it’s quick and easy to apply.

I’ve been using Hourglass’s new Vanish Airbrush Primer and it works wonders. It’s a translucent gel that helps to absorb oil, blur imperfections, minimize the look of pores, and smooth fine lines. It’s multipurpose – it doesn’t just ensure makeup lasts, but it also helps to create a seamless finish.”

3. Find the right foundation for you

“Choosing a good foundation starts with preference and skin type. If you have dry skin, I would use a hydrating foundation with a luminous and dewy finish. If you have oily skin, I recommend looking at a more matte foundation, or incorporating an oil-absorbing primer into your routine.”

4. How to apply your base

“I like to apply foundation with a brush, starting at the centre of the face and blending it out towards the hairline. After your foundation, add concealer where needed – specifically under the eyes, around the nose, middle of the forehead, bridge of the nose, and the centre of the chin. This will add extra coverage to those areas and brighten up your complexion. Apply powder to set.”

5. Get your glow on

“[After you’ve set your foundation], apply bronzer to the areas of the face where the sun would naturally hit to give skin warmth and dimension, and add a youthful flush of color by applying blush to the apples of the cheeks. For extra glow, add highlighter to the high points of the face, such as the cheekbone and brow bone.”

6. Make the eyes pop

“I always advise lightly contouring the eyes by applying a wash of light brown eyeshadow onto the eyelid and underneath the lower lash line. Curl the lashes and apply mascara to open the eyes and make them pop, then lightly fill in brows and apply brow gel to set them in place. And to finish? Apply a tinted lip balm to add color and hydration.”
