Bucking seasonal expectations, the major trend hitting the runway – and streets – early this Fashion Week calendar is the oversized statement eye. Bigger, blacker, and made to stand out, the classic smoky eye has been given extra density and texture. Perhaps the most talked about example of this high fashion look was seen at the Haute Couture Paris shows on Julia Fox, Kayne West’s new beau.
The actress and model wore an attention-grabbing, Black Swan-meets-Alyssa Edwards swathe of black pigment blended across her lids, reaching up to the brow bone, and out to the far corners of her eyes in a thick, rounded point. The strong makeup look was repeated over a series of days, event, and outfits, paired with slicked back hair.
For the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show, Fox was given an even bolder version, with a saturated graphic eye in solid black designed by celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath, and executed by Dainiel Kolaric for Pat McGrath Labs.

At Chanel’s SS22 Couture show, models glowered on the runway with their eyes encircled in dark charcoal kohl, and thickly underlined. The outer edges turned up and split in two, for a striking double-winged liner look.
For the makeup look at Giambattista Valli, eyes with still undeniably strong, but with a more delicate shape. With more focus on eyeliner, and less of pigments, makeup artists created multi-pronged wings, building from the inner corner of the eye and billowing out to the length of the eyebrow. With graphic looks a continuing style choice into the next season, following an AW of smoky eyes, it seems that the emboldened eyes are only getting started.
