Suffering from dark and puffy skin beneath your eyes? Whether it’s caused by aging, stress or lack of sleep there are ways to improve it. Kiehl’s Regional Skincare Expert Maya Zeenny shares her top tips for revitalizing your under-eye area.

Remove make up gently. When you remove makeup, use a mild formulation and carefully wipe away eye makeup without pulling or rubbing. A makeup removing cleansing oil can help remove mascara and eyeliner while also cleansing your entire face. To remove hard-to-remove eye makeup, dispense this cleanser onto a cotton pad and press on the area for 10 seconds before gently wiping outward.

Avoid rubbing or pulling. When cleansing your face or applying or removing makeup, be extra gentle with your eye area. Excessive pulling can even cause hyperpigmentation, puffiness, and make dark circles appear more visible along with the under-eye bags.

Smooth on a targeted eye treatment. Use an eye cream or serum (or both) to help visibly diminish under-eye bags. When applying your eye cream, gently tap the formula under the eye and along the orbital bone using your ring finger. Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado offers a super effective formula.

Protect your eyes from the sun. Exposure to UV rays is one of the main causes of early signs of aging and can cause discoloration and puffiness. Protect your eyes by wearing SPF and sunglasses with polarized, UV-protected lenses.

Always choose an eye cream rich in caffeine. Formulas with caffeine can help diminish puffiness around the eye area. Smoother looking eyes can help dark circles appear less prominent and help eyes look more rested overall. Try an eye cream with caffeine that helps visibly combat dark circles and puffy eyes.

Chill out. Cold is another form of vasoconstriction that naturally tightens those undereye capillaries temporarily. Popping your eye cream in the fridge before you apply for a refreshing burst of coolness on tired-looking eyes helps diminish under-eye bags. I suggest Kiehl’s Eye Fuel formula.

Proper Manual Eye Massage. To do a proper massage, gently apply a dab of eye cream and, using your ring finger, begin to circle around the eye area moving in a counter-clockwise direction. Do this for at least a minute, and then lightly pat in any excess cream. Alternatively, if you want to really focus in on the massage, grab a jade roller, and use that with your favorite eye cream. The rolling action helps soothes tired eyes for a visible reduction in the appearance of bags and dark circles.

Stay hydrated and reduce salt intake. Water makes up about 62% of our total body weight. Given this, it may not be surprising that dehydration can contribute to under-eye bags. Maintain a healthy diet and your salt consumption to help promote a healthy, refreshed appearance.
