Acne usually develops when oil, dead skin cells, makeup, dirt, or bacteria clog pores. This can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples that can vary in size and type, depending on how infected they get. Whether you have persistent acne blemishes or the occasional breakout, it is essential to use a simple skincare routine that will help treat existing blemishes while also helping prevent future imperfections. Adopting a simple skincare routine including cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and wearing sunscreen help manage acne because it helps with the skin’s natural shedding process.

Nevertheless, wearing a facemask can interfere with that process. Instead of those dead skin cells shedding throughout the day, they will be clogged in your pores. Masks also provide the perfect humid environment for bacteria to grow in our skin, which can lead to a breakout. Therefore practicing good mask-wearing hygiene is essential by following a specific anti-acne skincare routine. Here, Maya Zeeny, Kiehl’s skincare expert shares her tips.

Step 1: Cleanse away impurities.

Use an acne face wash like our Blue Herbal Acne Cleanser Treatment. If your skin is acne-prone, it is essential to effectively cleanse skin twice a day (once in the morning before wearing your mask and at night after removing your mask) to remove dirt, oil, and impurities. These impurities may clog pores, which can cause blackheads, whiteheads, and blemishes.

Step 2: Balance and soothe skin.

After cleansing, moisten a sterile cotton pad with Kiehl’s iconic Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion. Originally formulated in 1964, our toner for oily skin helps soothe and balance skin. Beloved for generations, this unique formulation inspired our entire Blue Herbal collection.

Step 3: Target blemishes with an acne spot treatment.

When you have an acne blemish, treat your breakout with our acne spot treatment with Salicylic Acid. Formulated with 2% Salicylic Acid, this potent preparation acts on affected areas to help clear blemishes.

Step 4: Help reduce breakouts with a facial lotion for acne-prone skin.

Care for your skin and help diminish acne breakouts by applying a daily acne treatment lotion with Salicylic Acid and Vitamin B3. This efficacious formula helps visibly reduce blemishes and helps prevent new ones from forming for clearer-looking skin.

Step 5: Defend skin with a daily sunscreen.

When your skin is prone to blemishes and imperfections, you may be looking to skip steps in your skincare routine. Sunscreen is a must-have formula to protect skin from external aggressors, which can damage skin. Our lightweight facial sunscreen is non-comedogenic, so it will defend your skin without clogging pores

Step 6: Detoxify skin with an Amazonian white clay mask like our Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask. When your skin needs a deep detox, apply the mask to help draw out impurities and refine the skin’s texture. Use this mask once or twice a week as part of your skincare routine for acne-prone skin to help visibly minimize pores and purify the skin.

In order to prevent acne, there are some tips to keep in mind:

The first step is to choose a mask that allows your skin to breathe. To accomplish that, the mask should sit snugly but comfortably on your face and should cover both your mouth and nose. Soft fabrics like cotton or silk are usually recommended since those materials tend to be more gentle and breathable on the skin, versus synthetic materials that tend to be harsher on the skin.

After choosing a well-fitting mask that does not irritate your skin, it is time to think about what you put under it. Refrain from wearing makeup under the mask, and if needed always aim to choose makeup products that are labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free underneath the mask.

Always wear a moisturizer underneath your mask followed by a sunscreen. Not only will this protect your skin from UV rays, but wearing sunscreen can also help prevent other mask-related skin issues, such as tan lines and the moisturizing helps reduce friction and chafing.

After a long day of wearing your mask, use a gentle cleanser to wash your face to remove all the accumulated debris and oil.
