Wear a Hijab? Here Are Some of the Best Tips to Take Care of Your Hair

Designer Safiya Abdallah fights off flat locks with these hijab-friendly hair tips:

Never tie up wet hair. The strands are more elastic when wet, which means it breaks easier. Not giving your scalp time to dry could also lead to skin irritations.

Tie hair loosely with a scrunchie. Pulling it back too firmly and using hijab caps too often could lead to a receding hairline. Use a light hairspray on stray hairs.

Choose fabrics that don’t cause friction. “I wear my non-slip Saf Chainmaille beanies to allow my hair some movement.”

Let your locks down and massage your scalp as soon as you’re home to encourage circulation.

Vitamin D is key to healthy hair and shine. Make time to sit in the sun for at least 30 minutes a week.

Use homemade hair masks once or twice a week for an hour. “I use avocado and fresh yogurt mixed with rice bran oil or sesame oil.”
