A Guide to the Region’s Breast Cancer Awareness Initiatives

During October, many brands show support for those affected by breast cancer by creating limited-edition products or giving their top-selling favorites a rosy makeover, with a percentage of the profits going towards a number of breast cancer foundations. In the region, designers and brands are taking part in the fight against breast cancer in their own ways.

For instance, every Friday and Saturday throughout the month of October, the Burj Khalifa will light up in pink in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer. The iconic landmark will also feature the official symbol of breast cancer, the pink ribbon. Additionally, a 60-second clip on breast cancer awareness will also be screened on the world’s tallest skyscraper, twice daily, at 8.14pm and 9.14pm, while the Dubai Fountain runs pink circles during the duration of the show. Meanwhile, Emirati designer Yasmin Al Mulla has designed an exclusive pink coat, with a percentage of its sales going to breast cancer patients around the world.

Read on for the different ways brands, designers, restaurants, salons, and more are raising awareness for breast cancer this October.

Yasmin Al Mulla’s breast cancer charity coat

In honor of breast cancer month, Reemami has partnered up with The Pink Caravan on a pink, “Tilapia Dress”. Through the sales of the design, the UAE-based brand will donate part of the proceeds directly to the charitable breast cancer initiative, supporting their mission to raise awareness about the importance of self examination and support treatment of patients.

CH Carolina Herrera
In the UAE and Saudi Arabia, CH Carolina Herrera has pledged to donate a portion of all ready-to-wear sales made on October 19 to various breast cancer associations in the region, such as Pink Caravan in the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s Zara Association. Additionally, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Herrera’s campaign against breast cancer, the designer has teamed up with Jessica Kahawaty and her mother, breast cancer survivor Rita Kahawaty, to spread positivity and hope to breast cancer patients and their loved ones.

Tips & Toes
To mark the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Tips & Toes has joined forces with hair extension experts M.E.F to create customized wigs to boost the spirits of nine cancer patients in the UAE who have lost their hair during chemotherapy treatments. In addition, with every AED 300 spent at any Tips & Toes branch, the company will donate a free pampering treatment to a breast cancer patient. Customers will be invited to write a hand-written note alongside the voucher, which will then be given to a female fighting the illness.

Ride-service app Careem is giving away 500 free mammography vouchers in partnership with the Saudi German Hospital in Dubai and Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children in Abu Dhabi. The vouchers will be given to female passengers (alongside a bouquet of pink roses) on a first come, first served basis. Additionally, Careem is offering free rides to and from the aforementioned hospitals during the first week of October.

La Cantine du Faubourg
The French dining destination is marking breast cancer awareness month by launching a “Pink Brunch” on October 20. Guests are invited to dine on a tantalizing menu of pastries, eggs, and mocktails for a good cause. A percentage of the profits made from the brunch will be donated towards various breast cancer associations, including Pink Caravan, Emirates Red Crescent, and Islamic Affairs & Charitable Activities Department.

This yoga studio is helping raise awareness on the devastating illness by hosting a special breast cancer awareness talk following a full moon yoga session on October 26 at 6.30pm. All instructees are encouraged to wear pink, with tickets priced at AED 80 (for which you can bring a friend for free).

Sister’s Beauty Lounge
The beauty salon is aiming to raise awareness by launching a number of special “pink me up” offers for October, including 10% off on all pink retail, 15% off on all white and pink manicures and pedicures, and 20% off on all pink hair colors. Additionally, the salon is donating all proceeds from a selection of their pink candles, labels, and badges to the Breast Friends foundation.
