Those with straightened styles know how hard it is to keep away frizz and flyaways. However, engineers at Dyson claim to have found a solid solution to irritating flyaways, with a new Flyaway attachment for the Dyson Supersonic hair styler designed for smoothing strands. Using the ‘Coanda effect’, the U-shaped attachment propels hair down and in. “The Coanda effect is an aerodynamic phenomenon,” explains the brand. “Air, when propelled at the right speed and pressure, naturally follows an adjacent surface, entraining surrounding air.” By pushing the hair down and in, the air flow effectively tucks away would-be flyaways and shorter hair strands underneath the longer hair on top, keeping them out of sight and the surface of the hair smoothed.

Italian hair guru Rossano Ferretti had a taste of the region’s humidity when he visited Dubai to launch his new salon at the Park Hyatt Dubai. “Humidity in the air is a big problem for creating frizz in the hair,” he says. His solution? Use a smoothing serum throughout the day for touch-ups as needed, with a good serum able to add a smoothed finish without weighing down hair. “You only need a small amount of my Brilliante Protective and Shining Oil,” he says. “Warm between the palms of the hands first before passing lightly over the hair as needed.”

George Northwood, hairstylist to the stars (and Meghan Markle‘s go-to during her residency in London), says that volume is everything when it comes to having healthy looking hair. If you’re not naturally blessed, he says, a little base-building product such as Sisley’s Volumizing Spray can work wonders in uplifting hair roots for that long-lasting thick hair look. “A good volumizing or texturizing spray can form a great base for styling. After spritzing this on, adding soft waves with a tong will add movement and vitality. Whether your hair is in good condition or not, using volumizing products before styling will give the illusion of a thicker, healthier head of hair.”

“The cordless hair styler has completely revolutionized the art of the touch-up,” says Dafydd Thomas, global head of education for ghd. The brand’s newest launch, the ghd Unplugged styler, is completely portable and able to be charged deskside by USB, making it ideal for on-the-go smoothing or office-to-night out waves. Taking just 45 seconds to heat up, the tool can be slipped straight into its heat-resistant clutch after use—no waiting to cool down. Thomas recommends using the Unplugged device as a quick way to refresh hair or to even completely change looks, with the plates able to both straighten and create waves that hold their shape.
