The Hair Diaries: Combating Unruly Curls

Vogue art director Donna Williams has always had unruly curls. However, finding a stylist she could trust was always a challenge as so many don’t understand how to work with naturally curly locks. Wishing to tame some of the frizz and change up her color, she stumbled upon Kozma & Kozma in Dubai.

I have lived in Dubai for five years now and I’ve finally found the hair salon for me. I have super curly hair and I’m always afraid of people cutting it, that don’t understand how curls work. It’s not as easy as cutting straight hair, you take off more than an inch and my curls will shrink to three times the length they used to be. I’ve had experiences in the past where I’ve walked into a salon and asked for a haircut and I‘m met with a look of horror and fear.

Hearing about Kozma & Kozma Salon in Al Wasl Road, Dubai dubbed the first salon in the region to specialize in curly hair, I was a bit skeptical. I turned to Instagram and did a deep dive into their services and clients, and realized that this salon is exactly what I was looking for. Then, when two of my friends told me I had to try them out, I knew it was time to brave the chop.

Launched by husband and wife, Hillary and Mike Kozma, this is the only salon in the Middle East that focuses on employing naturally curly hair experts. They have even gone as far as to develop their own special technique, The Kozma Curl Method. They help and train women that have transitioning hair and women that have straightened their hair for a long time and want their natural curls back.

Seeing as I’ve lived with this hair all my life, I thought I had it down with how to handle and style my hair but I learned so much going to Kozma & Kozma. I also walked in there a brunette and walked out a blonde. But let’s start at the beginning.

When I arrived, I was met by the wonderful Natalie, Kozma Curl Method expert and fellow curly-haired person. She instantly made me feel comfortable in the lush salon, think marble and gold touches, a flower chandelier and mirrors everywhere.

I was nervous. I’d never colored my hair before, and going blonde felt like quite a drastic change. Natalie, however, talked me through every step of the process. Once the right color was achieved, it took just about six hours, the lesson in curls began. The key to good healthy-looking locks is hydration and patience. I now know to keep my hair dripping wet when putting in product so it absorbs as much as possible, never towel dry, and invest in a Tangle Teezer. It’s saved my hair on countless occasions since my visit.

My new blonde locks, even a month down the line, still look fresh and most importantly healthy. It feels this way too. Natalie colored my hair keeping in mind how low maintenance I am. This is so important when looking for a stylist, you don’t want to walk away with hair you can’t handle yourself. I now swear by the Kozma Curl Method. I can’t preach it enough to all my friends. In fact, my next appointment is already booked.
