Over the weekend, 20 regional brands unveiled their Fall 2017 collections on the runway at season 9 of Fashion Forward in Hai D3. While most eyes were on the clothes, the hair, and the street style, the makeup proved to be equally as striking. A beauty army worked overtime backstage to dream up an array of fresh runway looks, some of which echoed the definitive beauty takeaways on international runways (hello, glitter.) Here’s are the beauty lessons to note from the FFWD shows.

Grown-up hair accessories

Big-league hair decorations ranged from pristine and polished to wonderful and weird. At Michael Cinco, models took to the runway with luxe hair embellishments in the form of crowns, dazzling headbands, clusters of pins and jewels, and smatterings of glitter on their romantic, fishtail braids. Amato took the whimsical hair ornaments to another level, and sent out models with thick branches of flowers interlocked into their manes.

Bold pops of pigment

Washes of colorful pigment around the eyes was the go-to look backstage among many designers, from the strips of deep blue shadow at Hussein Bazaza to the vibrant pink lids at Cheyma. However, vivid color wasn’t just constrained to the lids—At Amato, a high-impact jolt of orange swathed the model’s foreheads.

The bun gets an update

Top knots were taken to elevated new heights. Backstage at Lama Jouni, hairstylists twisted a portion of models’ lengths into a tight, off-kilter chignon that sat neatly along the hairline.
