The effervescent comedian Hadeel Marei brings the drama in beauty looks to match her uniquely bold humor.
Hadeel Marei is ready to take her throne as a next-generation queen of comedy. Posting for her 1.7 million TikTok followers, the Egyptian content creator writes, produces, and performs her own material, covering everything from sharp-witted interpretations about the struggles of daily life, to exploring fantastical scenarios that see her green-screened at UN headquarters. However, there has been some barriers to success, with her observation that Arab female comedians can be limited to a particular kind of comedy.
“There is a certain mold that holds women – our jokes are expected to be about our age, looks, shape, or being ultra-fem. I’m steering away from that reductive concept, and defying the cultural norms that tell me to be more docile and calm,” she points out. Using this resistance as more fuel for her fire – “I’m inspired by trauma” – she is now taking her brand of emotive comedy beyond social media, with a focus on writing her own television series, and launching into a full-fledged acting career.
