Celebrity hairstylist Deena Alawaid once again spun her magic on some of the Arab world’s most stylish women at Milan Fashion Week SS23. As the founder of Dubai-based hair salon Collective., Alawaid strongly believes in the power of representation: “I want Middle Eastern people, especially women, to have someone to look up to in this industry and believe they can achieve it too,” she says. Having worked with a few of the biggest names in the fashion and beauty worlds including Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Huda Kattan, Karen Wazen, and more, Alawaid went on to win the prestigious Dubai 2018 Salon Stylist of the Year award, and also made it to the final round in 2020. Her expertise in the industry also informed the launch of the Wax Stick by Collective.—a must for taming flyaways for the sleekest looks.
Below, she breaks down her most beautiful styles from the Milan leg of the fashion month—from chic updos and fun braids to textured waves.
Yasmin Zahran, Etro
It’s the “I woke up like this” step-up from textured hair, with a soft bed-head texture that looks like you’ve just let a damp braid loose. We wanted to fit the style of a very bohemian vibe so we created textured waves and added some braids. We used Balmain volumizing texture spray to achieve this finished look.
Ola Farahat, Versace
While the focus is on the Versace hair clips, we wanted to keep it very sleek and glossy using Dream Coat by Color Wow to help lock in that shine.
Zeynab El-Helw, Maison Margiela
The vibe was fun, energetic, and cool. We wanted something really edgy for the hair so we used extensions to add length to her hair and create this double-braided ponytail moment.
Ola Farahat, Prada
The off-duty bun that we’ve been noticing across the ‘gram is a departure from the classic messy top-knot. For a start, it’s sleeker across the top and tied tighter into place. Now called the “model” bun, thanks to its popularity with the likes of Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Hailey Bieber, it has a slightly more polished feel than messy buns, yet it still feels relaxed and effortless.
Dima Sheikhly, Versace
It’s a full Versace moment for Dima Sheikhly—the nostalgic ’90s inspiration you need starting with poker-straight hair is back. Straight hair comes with its very own concerns. From frizz to lack of volume and split ends, straight hair often needs a good blow-dry and plenty of styling serum for a truly sleek, silky finish. It may be straight but it’s anything but boring!
Dima Sheikhly, Fendi
We opted for a cool ’90s updo to frame her face and really focus on the outfit. We used Wax Stick by Collective. and the Dyson Corrale for this look.
