Chanel took the perspex trend, which has been dominating the street-style scene after being worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner to name but a few, to innovative new levels at its rainforest-inspired Spring 2018 show at the Grand Palais in Paris. The collection featured see-through boots, gloves, capes, bags, and even ponytail tubes. Karl Lagerfeld sent out a lineup of models, including show opener, Kaia Gerber, Taylor Hill, Adwoa Aboah, and Stella Maxwell, sporting low-slung ponytails wrapped in translucent, perspex tubes, topped off with matching lucite Panama hats. The rain-proof accessories were dreamed up by famed hairstylist Sam McKnight, who has been responsible for some of the storied house’s most dreamy backstage coiffures, including the looped-up ponytails secured with hairnets that appeared at the Fall 2017 Haute Couture show in July. To get the look right, the models’ hair had to be suctioned into the lengths of hollow cylinder using a vacuum.

Tom Pecheux’s 1980s-inspired makeup was equally as bold. Pecheux framed the models’ eyes with a wash of smoked-out, blue eyeshadow that extended way past the temples. A swipe of bright red lipstick and blush completed the scene-stealing look.

Here’s a look back at the evolution of the Chanel ponytail.
