Actress and writer Carrie Fisher passed away at the age of 60 in California yesterday. Known for her career-defining role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies, her character’s iconic oversized twin buns are considered to be one of Hollywood’s most memorable beauty moments. The hairstyle that was imagined by hairdresser Patricia McDermott and director George Lucas drew influence from portraits of Native American women by photographer Edward S. Curtis. Since the movie’s inception in 1977, the double twists have transcended time to become a runway-approved look.

At Chanel’s Spring 2016 couture collection show, a nod to the memorable hairstyle was imagined by hairstylist Sam McKnight through a large roll-up that extended beyond models’ ears. Meanwhile, on the catwalk at Christian Dior’s Fall 2016 collection, tightly wound low knots that grazed the nape of the neck were a modern take on the look. Similarly, a version of the latter style was crafted with braids on the runway at Miu Miu Fall 2013.
