The Biggest Breakout Beauty Trends at Paris Fashion Week

After a relatively sober week in Milan, Paris Fashion Week brought the drama—and a healthy dose of humor. There were sparkly knickers and walk-of-shame chic at Miu Miu, wild horses at Stella McCartney, and robot dogs at Coperni.

As for beauty, there was something for everyone: from messy bedhead hair at Chanel and Miu Miu, to pops of color at Victoria Beckham and beautiful deep red lips at Schiaparelli.

Below, Vogue rounds up the best beauty trends for fall 2023.

Messy Hair Don’t Care

Ditching polished ponytails and frizz-free lengths, this season disheveled ’dos took center stage. See the backcombed tresses at Miu Miu, courtesy of Guido, which evoked the highly relatable Frazzled Englishwoman archetype. Equally nonchalant were the artfully messy manes at Chanel, created by James Pecis, which felt more effortlessly Parisian than the slapdash British equivalent.

Get Wet

The mood was somber at Balenciaga, as Demna ushered in a return to craft. The hair was suitably understated: eschewing height or volume, it was either slicked back or lacquered and sleek. Elsewhere, at Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton harked back to the ’90s with anatomical precision and a dark elegance. To complement this, hair was either slicked into intricate waves at the front or tied back and glossy.

Goth Girls

Goth girls do it better. At least that was the story at Givenchy, where eyes were rimmed with soft kohl. At Dior, too, creative and image director for makeup Peter Philips offered up his twist on a smoky eye, with his iteration being much more deconstructed. “It’s a strong look,” says Philips. “Up close it looks beautiful, but it is also visible from far away, which was essential, because the catwalk is huge.” Elsewhere, Rick Owens kept things spooky with elliptical black shapes around the eyes and some monstrous black contact lenses.

Color Pops

Jolts of color around the eyes were the standout beauty look at Victoria Beckham, where makeup artist Fara Homidi created reverse feline flicks in and underneath the waterline in shades of lilac, pink, mustard, and beige. Elsewhere, at Undercover, elongated lashes in electric red provided a necessary dopamine hit, albeit one with an almost sinister aftertaste.

Leave it to Pat McGrath to create this season’s hottest trend: sumptuous scarlet pouts. “Lips were a deep, blood-red ombré,” she said of the look at Schiaparelli. “It added a seductive, multidimensional finish that was simply perfect.” Makeup artist Karin Westerlund conjured a similar air of seduction—she created the perfect reddish-brown pout at Saint Laurent.
