Beauty for SS23 promises to be eclectic, with this September’s runways showcasing everything from clean faces and hair, to bold colorful eyes and off-beat blush placement.
Day & Night
The summer season had an uncharacteristic hint of darkness, with Versace’s dark winged liner in smoky navy and purple adding drama to glowing complexions. Christian Dior toyed with sweet and sultry, creating a feline eyeliner with playful pigtails. Spring’s pinks were seen at Giorgio Armani, with a First Lady-esque petal blush and matching lips giving prim and proper.
Summer’s Colors
At Dries Van Noten, makeup artist played with color backstage, creating monochrome lid looks with swatches of deep blue or gold, popping against drenched, wet look hair. The rainbow of colors continued at DSquared, with a tropicana theme inspiring aqua and green arcs across models’ eyes with peachy balmed lips, at Chloe, with silvery detailing on the inner eyes, and Etro’s dreamy blush contouring in cotton candy shadesAt Botter, the 90s matte brown lip was given a futuristic update, with holographic toppers added for a glimmering bronzed or icy purple glaze, while Moschino went camp with overlined fire engine-red pouts.
Clean Skin
Victoria Beckham’s beauty look kept it clean, with a simple damp hair and shower fresh skin highlighting au natural brows. The fresh-faced look continued at Givenchy, Loewe, Bottega Veneta, and Hermes, with a strong focus on clear skin emerging as a driving SS23 trend.
Larger Than Life
On the more surreal side, logomania extended to the complexion at Valentino, with select models monogrammed in black pigment – a striking finish to the Milan shows. Gucci’s twins-inspired show also explored themes of celebrity, with a reverse highlighting technique used across forehead, nose, and cheeks to mimic a photographer’s flash bulb. Prada’s oversized lashes went viral, with the downwards tilted lash angles creating an extended optical illusion on models’ faces.
