On any other red carpet, you can expect to see glowing skin and a beauty trend or two—but this is the VMAs 2022! This awards show is legendary for creating bold red carpet looks, making it the perfect opportunity for celebrities to opt out of their signature makeup for something much more daring. The VMAs have spawned some of the biggest style moments to transcend the red carpet and this year’s celebration was no different.

Attendees proved that makeup is fully back and better than ever, choosing unexpected lip colors and playing with texture. From Lizzo’s monochromatic navy lipstick to Taylor Swift’s Euphoria-inspired bedazzled eyeliner, the biggest names in music are embracing the art of the full face.

Lizzo went monochromatic, matching her navy lipstick to her dramatic Jean Paul Gaultier gown. She kept her hair slicked back to show off her flawless complexion, which was prepped with Charlotte Tilbury‘s Glow Toner and Magic Cream and perfected with the Beautiful Skin Foundation and Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer.

The singer amped up her signature black eyeliner with some iridescent silver rhinestones and shimmery eyeshadow, which paired nicely with her bejeweled dress. Celebrity makeup artist Pat Mcgrath worked with Swift to create the “timeless” look. “Tonight’s look for the 2022 VMAs was sophisticated, sultry and sublime, a combination of Divine Skin, a crystal winged eye created with my new Mothership X: Moonlit Seduction Eye Palette and the perfect red lip with LiquiLust Legendary Wear Lipstick in Elson 4,” McGrath said in a press release.

To complement her futuristic silver dress, Bailey kept her makeup minimal. The singer stuck with muted matte shades for her eyes and cheeks, and topped things off with the perfect glossy nude lip.

The rapper brought the double winged eyeliner trend to the red carpet with his elongated green eyeliner. The reverse cat eye shape extended out from his lower lash line, while the rest of his glowing complexion stayed bare.

Avril Lavigne

The OG emo princess elevated her usual black smokey eye with some colorful rhinestones on the outer and inner corners of her eye. Lavigne also added pops of color to her middle lower lash line, to match her bright orange money piece highlights.

The singer kept things classic with bronzed cheeks and a bold red lip. To achieve the look, makeup artist Deanna Paley used BeautyBlender’s Bounce Liquid Whip Long Wear Foundation to perfect her skin and Treslúce Beauty Intenso Liner in Amor for the lips.

Cameron channeled Wednesday Addams with her braided pigtails and fair complexion. For the eyes, she selected a smoked-out cat eye and added some white eyeliner to the waterline and wing to create dimension.
