Yesterday, London’s Dover Street was at a standstill for the Victoria Beckham show – fans blocking traffic to get a glimpse of their idol. Backstage in the beauty department it was just as exciting, as makeup artist Pat McGrath, British Vogue beauty editor at large, and hairstylist Guido Palau, Vogue contributing beauty editor and Redken global creative director, were in the (very fancy) house of the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery, having come to London early especially for her show.
“Look at this,” said McGrath guesting to the backstage surroundings. “It’s fabulous, I am so excited.” Was there a specific brief for the beauty look at this big anniversary show? “Not really. It’s been business as usual. But it’s a very special moment for Victoria and I’m so happy to be here for it.” The look involved bare-skin perfection care of her Pat McGrath Labs’s Skin Fetish – the cult highlighter – on the key points of the face; the new Lip Fetish Sheer Color Balm in Blow Up, a natural plumpy pink, on the lips; her Mothership V: Bronze Seduction palette for a wash of taupe over the eyes. “She just wanted the girls to be their own characters and be their gorgeous and glowing selves. We have girls of all ages groups walking and she really wanted to make a statement on that. They are already great iconic faces. We have only just slightly enhanced them,” McGrath explained.
For hair, Palau was bringing a masculine idea of minimal beauty to the table: “Victoria likes a minimal look,” he said. “People might think she likes a more feminine or girly look when it comes to the hair, but actually she likes quite a boyish style. Over the years she has developed her idea of beauty which is probably not what people thought it would be – it’s a luxury idea of beauty presented in a very minimal way.” Accordingly he used Redken Fashion Works 12 and Forceful 23 in the fronts and the sides of the hair for a slightly wet look that retained its comb marks and then Diamond Oil and Shine Flash 02 at the back for high shine. “It’s a little bit shiny and a little bit wet – it’s a boyish thing,” he concluded.
A true homecoming for all concerned.
