The Video Music Awards presents A-listers with the perfect opportunity to push the envelope with their hair and makeup choices, and this year’s event was no different. The standout beauty look on the red carpet gravitated towards rose-colored lids, a refreshing departure from the smoked-out eyes and neutral color palettes we’ve gotten so accustomed to seeing. The night’s host (and nominee in five categories), Katy Perry, stepped out with a deep, amethyst-toned blend of eyeshadows that made her emerald eyes pop. Romantic eye makeup also found a fan in Lorde, who elevated her lilac Monique Lhuillier fairytale gown with a wash of pastel pink shadow. Vanessa Hudgens reimagined the cat-eye by opting for a strip of glittering ruby liner that coordinated with her red dress, and Joan Smalls’ bold, rose-colored smoky eye stood out against the backdrop of her otherwise pared-back makeup, matching the sparkle of her chandelier earrings.
