Olivia Colman swapped diamonds for jewelry that demands more for women

Two years after women in black made a stance against Hollywood’s gender inequality, the Golden Globes red carpet is largely business as usual – save for the odd token brandishing its wearer’s support of the Time’s Up movement. Replacing pins, badges and ribbons of previous years are rings bearing the message, “Equal representation for actresses”, produced by the campaign ERA 50:50. Wearing her women’s rights insignia proudly? Olivia Colman, who scooped up the Best Actress in a Drama Award for her portrait of HM The Queen in The Crown. Bow down.

Bey & Jay were fashionably late

Beyoncé and Jay-Z opted out of the red carpet and entered The Beverly Hilton via the VVVIP side entrance an hour into the ceremony. The pop queen, who received a nod in the Best Original Song category, wore a black gown with voluminous gold puffball sleeves for the occasion – over a decade on from the last time she attended.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge offered up her couture to the highest bidder

Backstage after accepting one of her accolades for Fleabag – side note: check out her acceptance speech thanking Barack Obama, while reminding the audience of an infamous scene that referenced the former president in series one – Phoebe Waller-Bridge turned the spotlight on Australia’s bushfire crisis. The British star announced that she will auction her Ralph & Russo haute couture suit to raise money for relief funds – one of few political fashion statements made during the night. But first, a round of G&Ts in tins to mark Waller-Bridge’s victories.

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn enjoyed a rare date night at The Beverly Hilton

Although the Vogue cover star and her boyfriend chose not to pose together on the red carpet, the pair united once safely away from the glare of the paparazzi, and with only the prying camera lenses of social-media sleuths inside. Swift and Alwyn have largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight since they began dating in the autumn of 2016, but the actor attended the US premiere of Cats, the film for which Swift’s music was nominated, in December. With competition for Best Original Song especially fierce this year – Swift and Beyoncé lost out to Elton John, with lyricist Bernie Taupin, for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” – the “Shake It Off” singer will have valued the support of her partner, who she repeatedly references in her latest album Lover.

Jason Momoa flouted the dress code

Sure, awards season is about the awards, but it’s also about what people are wearing. Or, in the case of Jason Momoa at this year’s Golden Globes, what they’re not wearing – namely: sleeves. When the Aquaman star arrived on the red carpet with his wife Lisa Bonet, he had on a green velvet jacket. But later the famously muscular Momoa removed his Tom Ford blazer to take in the show in just his black vest, much to the consternation of Succession star Brian Cox – and the delight of Twitter.

Michelle Williams brought close friend Busy Philipps to tears with the most powerful speech of the evening

“I’m grateful for the acknowledgement of the choices I’ve made and also grateful to have lived at a moment in our society where choice exists,” Michelle Williams said while collecting the award for Best Actress In A Limited Series Or TV Film. “Because as women and as girls things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice. I’ve tried my very best to live a life of my own making and not just a series of events that happened to me.” The 39-year-old, who is pregnant with her first child with fiancé Thomas Kail, went on to make it abundantly clear that she was speaking directly about reproductive rights. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose, to choose when to have my children and with whom, when I felt supported and able to balance our lives – knowing as all mothers know that the scales must and will tilt towards our children.”

Reese Witherspoon had no idea where to sit

While Witherspoon was nominated for Best Actress In A Drama Series alongside her The Morning Show co-star Jennifer Aniston, she had other friends and co-workers to take into account – including Big Little Lies’ Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz as well as Kerry Washington, who will star in Witherspoon’s adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere this year. “I will jump around. Hot potato! This is all the people I love,” she shared happily on the red carpet.

Tom Hanks’ face was the best part of the ceremony

True to form, Ricky Gervais made some controversial remarks in his role as host. Making fun of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’s two hour and 40 minute runtime, the comedian quipped: “Leonardo DiCaprio attended the preview and by the end his date was too old for him” Just as amusing as his stand-up, however? Tom Hanks’s shocked facial expression after every joke. The 63-year-old Hollywood legend was also awarded the Cecil B DeMille Award, given each year to a “talented individual who has made a lasting impact on the film industry”.

Brad Pitt revealed his nickname for Leonardo DiCaprio

Taking home the statuette for Best Supporting Actor In A Film for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Brad Pitt thanked his close friend “LDC”, calling him an “all-star” and a “gent”. “I wouldn’t be here without you, man,” he said. “Still, I would have shared the raft.” As for Pitt’s plus one for the night? He joked that he planned to bring his mother – but he thought it might be a little “awkward” if the media said he was dating her after the two appeared on a red carpet together.

The Australian wildfires were at the forefront of everyone’s minds

The first mention of the evening came courtesy of Russell Crowe, who skipped the ceremony to be at home with his family in Australia – but the winner of Best Actor In A Limited Series Or TV Film had forwarded on a powerful speech, shared by Jennifer Aniston. “Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based,” she read. “Later in the ceremony, Patricia Arquette echoed that sentiment while accepting the statuette for Best Supporting Actress In A TV Series, Limited Series, Or TV Film; Pierce Brosnan offered a message of support to the people of Australia; and Cate Blanchett thanked the volunteer firefighters helping to combat the devastating blazes. It was Joaquin Phoenix, however, who really drove the message home in his acceptance speech for Best Actor In A Film: Drama, claiming that while it was wonderful to send “well wishes” to Australia, those in the audience – himself included – needed to do more. “We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs.”
