This collection marks Creatures of Comfort’s inaugural Resort outing, so perhaps it makes sense that Jade Lai would take this as a chance to unpack her label’s DNA a bit. Here were familiar CoC codes: cropped, wide-leg trousers; boxy outerwear; arty layers. It was quietly eccentric and infinitely covetable. Lai’s great styling surely speaks to a specific kind of I-want-to-be-her downtown creative type (the designer’s personal style is impeccable), but near every piece seemed like a feasible addition to a lot of different types of wardrobe.
Among the newer explorations were not one, but two denims: a snowy fabrication from the storied American Cone Mills, and a Japanese quilted deep indigo. Both were handled in a way that was pure Creatures: Lai whipped the American fabric into a tank with a fraying peplum detail, while the Japanese denim became an oversize jacket and pants, styled with a sheer vest underneath. Elsewhere was a great grouping of ribbed knits, such as the canary yellow flares and matching top. On the whole, it was a lineup strong enough to make you rejoice about the key reason behind CoC’s Resort debut: With a beloved Mulberry Street multi-brand of the same name under her belt, Lai plans to open a stand-alone outpost for the line in the next few months.
