In 1981, Hermès CEO, Jean-Marie Dumas, sat next to English actress and singer, Jane Birkin, on a flight from Paris to London and witnessed her scramble to gather items from her straw purse that had fallen to the floor. History was in the making and Dumas was inspired to make Birkin—the ex-wife of one of France’s living legends, singer Serge Gainsbourg—a suitable weekend purse. Three years later, the first Birkin—a black, handmade leather bag—was born and the rest is history.
