Ulla Johnson

Think of Ulla Johnson as Isabel Marant’s New York spirit sister. Johnson likes a bohemian dress and a slouchy drawstring-waist pant with an oversize sweater. Hers is an unstudied and casual yet put-together look that resonates with a lot of women, not least of all with women like Johnson herself, who runs a fast-growing business and has three young children. This is the designer’s first Pre-Fall outing, made at the request of her biggest retail supporter, Barneys. The collection includes the micro-floral dresses (short and long) and embroidered peasant tops we’ve come to expect from Johnson, as well as a larger knitwear range, with sweaters made by local artisans in Peru. A pullover style with thread fringe at the shoulders had a nice vintage vibe. Johnson worked with denim, whipping together generous, easy shapes and leaving the edges raw and frayed. Our money, though, is on the more tailored denim jumpsuit and its multitasking potential. The Ulla gal will wear it with suede moccasin boots at drop-off and on date night with a pair of ankle-wrap sandals from the designer’s fledgling shoe line.
