Tunisian Director Takes Home Palme d’Or

The coveted Palme d’Or, the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, has gone to Tunisian director, Abdellatif Kechiche’s three-hour film, “Blue is the Warmest Color”, a romance with a 15-minute graphically intimate scene that had all of Cannes talking this past week. French actress, Léa Seydoux, who recently starred in the playful Prada short films promoting the Candy fragrance, was also on hand to accept the award alongside her co-star Adele Exarchopoulos. Jury head, Director Steven Spielberg, honored all three people with the award, an unusual step for the Film Festival—but then, the French are, indeed, known to have an exception for every rule.

It’s doubtful, however, that the film will be screened in Kechiche’s home country. The Ministry of Culture’s Fathi Kharrat, has already commended the film, though declaring that it is perhaps best left for another environment as it could incite violent reactions if shown in Tunisian cinemas.
