Another round of fashion musical chairs has hit the industry: after Cathy Horyn’s departure from The New York Times and Suzy Menkes’ move to Condé Nast International, Vanessa Friedman has just been appointed Fashion Director and Chief Fashion Critic for The New York Times.
Friedman is currently still holding her position as the Financial Times (FT) as Fashion Editor and will start her duty at both publications, The New York Times and The International New York Times (former International Herald Tribune) in April. Friedman has been working as the Financial Times’ Fashion Editor since 2003. Previously, she has worked as a Fashion Director for InStyle UK and was a contributor to Vogue, The Economist, The New Yorker, and Entertainment Weekly.
While making the announcement of the new hire, Jill Abramson, the paper’s Executive Editor stated, “I’m thrilled to welcome Vanessa to The Times. She is the perfect journalist to be our leading voice on global fashion.”
