Anja Rubik’s Bread and Butter

Polish writer and journalist turned singer Dorota Maslowska (also known as Mister D.) had Polish supermodel Anja Rubik star in her lo-fi music video for her track “Chleb” (Bread), an electro-pop song from Maslowska’s album Społeczeństwo Jest Niemiłe (Society Is Mean)—needless to say, the video went viral.

But those who expected Rubik to act like a glamorous model might be (pleasantly) surprised to see a completely different side of her. Rubik, who has fame for being a Vogue cover girl and the face of many high fashion brands (Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, and Givenchy, amongst others), stages a deliberately trashy and surreal performance for Maslowska’s video, which aims criticize Polish politics and society.

“She [Maslowska] decided to do this album as almost a sort of social experiment and also to kind of poke people a little bit, to stimulate them into thinking,” Rubik told Fashionista. “I was just playing a part, and I just had to put my fragility towards beauty aside and create this persona. I mean, the video is supposed to be completely in bad taste and completely kitsch.”

Starring as “Princess Desiara,” Rubik lip-syncs while riding a giant dachshund against a 90s inspired animated backdrop, dressed in a furry white jacket paired with a crop-top, a mini-skirt, and a pair of white boots, and accessorized with hoop earrings and a tiara—an outfit which earned her the name of Polish council estate princess.

But what’s the song’s actual meaning? The translation of the rather mysterious lyrics suggest that Maslowska tells the story of a girl who leaves home to buy bread for dinner. But what a giant dachshund has to do with it is another question entirely.
