Schiaparelli-650x433Yesterday, the London-based Kerry Taylor Auction House reported that the much acclaimed ‘Zodiac’ jacket, from Elsa Schiaparelli’s Astrology Winter 1938/39 collection, was sold for £110,000 (AED/SAR 660,950).

Embroidered by the Parisian luxury artisans, Albert and Marie-Louise Lesage (founders of Maison Lesage), the midnight-blue jacket is embellished with patterns of stars, planets, and signs of the zodiac, which include silk velvet, metal, rhinestones, and plastic.

Astronomer, Giovanni Schiaparelli, the designer’s uncle, nicknamed his niece ‘Big Dipper’ (after the constellation), when he noted that she had a penchant for astronomy and astrology.

The Della Valle Group acquired Maison Schiaparelli in 2006. Earlier this year, Marco Zanini was appointed Creative Director and is now in charge of the Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear collections. Zanini will present his first collection in Paris during the Spring 2014 Haute Couture season in January.
