Roberto Cavalli Speaks Up

Life Ball 2013 - opening show

Over the years, Roberto Cavalli has made a name for himself, not only for his fashion statements, but also for his statements in general. Just like fellow designer Karl Lagerfeld, the Italian designer is reputed (even feared) for not mincing his words.

After raging against celebrity dressing, Cavalli accused the American designer Michael Kors of copying his designs for the second time—his first accusations dating back to an interview with Style.com in December 2013. “Mr. Michael Kors, he copies everything! It’s really a scandal and nobody has the courage to say anything. It’s really not fair,” Cavalli stated in his latest interview with Haute Living. He further expressed his general disappointment with today’s fashion, which is, according to him, “meant to be fast and sold at a very cheap price’’ and fails to provide thrills, as “there’s been nothing truly new since the 1950s, except many sneakers.”

This isn’t the first time that Cavalli has openly accused other designers of misappropriating his designs. In fact, he also accused his former assistant, the young designer Olivier Roustaing, who works as Balmain’s Creative Director, of plagiarism, via a harsh comment that he made on Balmain’s Instagram. “This is my design,’’ he wrote, referring to a Pre-Fall 2014 Balmain dress worn by actress Adele Exarchopoulos at the 39th annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, adding “Olivier…I teach you…and now, you copy!” Needless to say, the master is not very satisfied with his former apprentice’s behavior.

As of today, both Kors and Roustaing have remained silent on Cavalli’s comments. “I’m not scared of anything. I’m spontaneous,” concluded Cavalli, who just set Milan on fire, both literally and figuratively, with a pyromaniac-worthy Fall 2014 womenswear show.
