New Delhi-based womenswear designer, Rahul Mishra, has been announced as the India and Middle East winner of the world-renowned 2013/14 International Woolmark Prize. Mishra was awarded USD$50,000 and will next create a capsule collection crafted from merino wool to compete with the four other Woolmark finalists from the US, Asia, Australia, and Europe—respectively, Joseph Altuzarra; the China-based design duo, “ffiXXed”; Christopher Esber; and the British designers, “Sibling”.

“We congratulate Rahul on winning the India and Middle East regional prize. With the exciting expansion of the prize in this region, which now covers the UAE, Pakistan, and Lebanon, the award is becoming more competitive and more interesting each year,” explained Rob Langtry, Woolmark’s chief strategy and marketing officer.

Chosen from amongst the most promising designers coming from India and the Middle East—which also included Lebanon’s Lara Khoury, Dubai’s Marina Qureshi, and Fujeirah’s Madiyah Al Sharqi—Rahul Mishra was awarded for an ivory-white A-line jacket dress, adorned with geometrical, retro-looking hand-embroideries made with merino wool yarn.
Alexander Wang also has a reason to celebrate: the newly nominated Woolmark ambassador was just shot by Annie Leibovitz for the company’s “No Finer Feeling” campaign, in which Wang poses alongside a merino sheep.

The international competition winner will be revealed during Milan’s Fall 2014 shows in February 2014 and will receive a further USD$100,000, as well as the opportunity to be stocked by prestigious retailers, including Harvey Nichols, Saks Fifth Avenue, and 10 Corso Como among others.
