Princess Reema Bint Bandar Al-Saud Launches 10KSA for Breast Cancer Awareness

“If you stand still you give them the power to push you down. I’d rather keep walking. Then they have to follow.” HRH Princess Reema Bint Bandar Al-Saud delivered some powerful words while in conversation with Fast Company editor-in-chief, Robert Safian, at SXSW (the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas). Al-Saud, a keynote speaker, discussed the various challenges Saudi women encounter while working in a country where they have only just recently been given the legal right to work. Al-Saud chose the SXSW platform to announce that she is launching a breast cancer awareness campaign called 10KSA.

Scheduled to occur on October 24, 2015, the 10KSA event will gather 10,000 women in Riyadh to form a human pink ribbon (set to make the Guinness Book of World Records) and raise funds for the Zahra Breast Cancer Association. Throughout the day, the event—which Al-Saud co-founded with Dr. Modia Batterjee DHA—will host mammograms, spa and fitness activities, entertainment, goods for sale from local designers, and a variety of educational speakers intended to help inform women on the disease, which has seen an increase in Saudi women since the beginning of the new millennium.
