Britain’s Prince Harry hosted a fund-raising gala last evening at the JW Marriott Marquis hotel in Dubai for his charity, Sentebale, which helps to provide facilities for HIV-infected children in the African kingdom of Lesotho.

“Your money is not being thrown in a box where you don’t know where it’s going. It is going into brickwork,” explained the Prince of Wales during his speech at the gala, which raised more than USD$1 million for Sentebale, in partnership with the children’s foundation Al Jalila, initiated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

Sentebale was set up by Prince Harry himself and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, and recognized by the United Nations in 2010. “Our guiding vision is to give this generation the support they need to shape a prosperous future for themselves and their families. Talking about HIV and understanding it isn’t dangerous. Denying it, or not knowing about it, definitely is,” he added.

The auction held during the dinner raised money through a range of special prizes and precious items, including works of contemporary art, fine jewelry, rare coin collections, and hospitality at the Dubai World Cup horse race.

“Thank you for your generosity and all the very best with Dubai’s bid for the World Expo 2020,” concluded the Prince, speaking in Arabic, to his guests’ delight.
