Macy’s has confirmed its plans to open a 205,000-square-foot, four-level store at the Al Maryah Central in Abu Dhabi–making it the first outlet of the iconic department store to open outside of the US.
Macy’s Abu Dhabi location is scheduled to open in 2018, along with the UAE’s second Bloomingdale’s store (the first, opened in 2010 in The Dubai Mall) in the same location.
Terry Lundgren, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s Inc., told WWD, “I just think Abu Dhabi is booming. There is an already built-in consumer. We are going into the center of Abu Dhabi, which has been developed.”
Conglomerate group Al Tayer, whose luxury fashion division boasts Harvey Nichols, Jimmy Choo, and Alexander McQueen, will operate the US $1 billion licensing deal, in partnership with property developer, Gulf Related.
Khalid Al Tayer, Al Tayer Group’s CEO of retail stated, “Al Maryah Central provides an ideal home for these landmark introductions, forming one of many significant developments underway in Abu Dhabi over the coming years, which [will] serve to strengthen its position as a cultural, commercial, and tourism leader.”
