Vogue’s Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Cover

Finally? Depends on whom you ask. Kim Kardashian and her fiancé Kanye West have officially been confirmed as the cover stars for American Vogue’s April 2014 cover, shot by Annie Leibovitz. While not everybody might agree with Editor in Chief Anna Wintour’s choice, this marketing move is expected to make the cash registers ring.

It was actually celebrity web site Jezebel that started the rumors  earlier this year, claiming that both Kardashian and West were spotted shooting the cover for American Vogue in Los Angeles. Fashionista promptly followed by publishing an article stating that Kardashian has already become the “style icon we never knew we wanted” and that, therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the reality-TV starlet adorning the cover of Vogue.

And it looks like Kardashian’s fairytale has finally come true: not only is she gracing the cover of Vogue in a white strapless Lanvin wedding gown, but West is standing behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, while she shows off her Lorraine Schwartz designed, 15-carat diamond engagement ring.

So how did the public react to the over-romanticized and highly-publicized cover? While Kimye fans were obviously pleased, some other celebrities, such as (popular 90s) actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, did not hesitate to publicly voice their disappointment. “Well…I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???” the actress wrote on Twitter. Shortly after, she was followed by The Muppets, who posted a parody of the cover with Kermit and Piggy mimicking Kimye’s pose. Comedian Seth Rogen and James Franco also posted their own parody.

That said, Kardashian and West needn’t worry: in her Editor’s Letter, Wintour expressed her full backing in the matter. “Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it,” Wintour stated.

“Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that,” she concluded.
