Jonathan Simkhai

Sport references are a dime a dozen these days, but Jonathan Simkhai knows how to keep them fresh. The designer was incorporating basketball shorts, skater pants, and mesh hoodies in his collections long before athleisure reached its fever pitch. For Pre-Fall, he turned his attention toward swimming. “I was picturing these cool girls on the varsity swim team hanging out by the chain-link fence,” he explained in his studio. Color-blocking and X-back bra tops mimicked racing swimsuits, ditto the watery palette of cornflower blue, aquamarine, and white. Body-conscious knit pieces in a rayon-cotton-spandex blend clung to the body and had a slight sheen, while touches of neoprene also worked to reinforce the motif. Elsewhere, “composition notebook” prints were a cute nod to high school, showing up on a textured, patch-print miniskirt.
