Earlier this month, when recovering designer John Galliano was asked on the French news program Le Supplément if he had plans to return to fashion, he responded, “Step by step.” It appears as if he has begun plotting his much-anticipated return.
Page Six reports that the former Dior head, who lost his job after his infamous anti-Semitic remarks at Café La Perle, is in conversation with Maison Martin Margiela to start a couture line for the house. “Galliano has been talking to Margiela to take the brand into haute couture,” states a source. “He has already hired five or six staff members for his atelier in Paris.” The brand has been without an official creative director since 2009, when its founder, Martin Margiela, left the business.
Currently, Galliano is the creative director for Russian perfumery chain L’Etoile, and previously had a studio residence at Oscar de la Renta. However, Margiela majority shareholder Renzo Rosso denied the rumors but left some hope, saying, “Who wouldn’t like to work with him? If he ever got back his name, I would be the first to produce his collections.”
Galliano’s rep was equally vague of the deal, saying, “He’s having active and ongoing conversations with a few companies.” Stay tuned for further announcements very shortly.
