Ruffles are in Season at Johanna Ortiz Resort 2016

Since first introducing you to Johanna Ortiz in April, the Columbian designer’s off-the-shoulder festive garments have been increasingly in demand among Middle Eastern élégantes who search for a unique alternative when dressing for their numerous social events. Here, we take a closer look at her Resort 2016 collection.

While the West meets East (Far East—Ortiz often looks to Japanese culture) is carried on from previous collections, via its obi wraps and delicate flower prints, this Resort 2016 offering highlights a study on the deconstruction of the men’s shirt, reinterpreting it into unexpected feminine silhouettes. But the focal point, Ortiz explains, is the undulating fabric that wraps around cuffs, waists, skirt hemlines, and bare shoulders, “Ruffles upon ruffles upon ruffles,” exclaims Ortiz to Style.om/Arabia. Here, volume blends with a fluency inspired by the Columbian national flower—the orchid. The rich textiles feature prints and intricate embroideries—some handmade—and delicate embellishments in vibrant poppy reds, salmon pinks, and lavender purples. There’s even a modest floor length embroidered ivory gown that we’re betting can work splendidly for a bride-to-be planning a destination wedding.

Shop Johanna Ortiz Resort 2016 until August 16th on Moda Operandi.
