Since returning to Dubai after completing a degree at the London College of Fashion, Huda Al Nuaimi has specialized in designing abayas and other modest fashions. She launched her label, Malaak (“angel”), in 2010 but has recently rebranded it and the brand now carries her name. The daughter of an English designer mother and an Emirati father, Al Nuaimi credits her mixed background for her “less is more” brand ethos, which she hopes will appeal to an international clientele.
The Ramadan collection features lightweight, knit-lace fabrics in soft earth tones, save for a versatile midnight blue hand-embellished maxi coat. The lengths vary—a soft peach overlay rests above the ankles while a moss green kimono abaya grazes the floor. Several of the looks, including the latter, feature handmade dragonfly details on the shoulders. “I love what dragonflies represent: prosperity, transformation, luck, peace, and harmony,” Al Nuaimi explained to Style.com/Arabia.
As for those delicate lace knit details, they’re all bespoke. “I have always used lace knit throughout my collections,” she continued. “This season, however, I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I woke up one morning and decided to make my own lace.” Al Nuaimi studied the concept, drew a design, and then incorporated it by outlining the fabric and creating a rope knit. “It’s not easy, but it’s stunning.” Indeed.
The Huda Al Nuaimi Ramadan collection will be available for sale during a trunk show on June 6th at Vida Hotel, Downtown Dubai.
