To celebrate the United Arab Emirates’ 42nd National Day, Harvey Nichols Dubai will present Sougha, an Emirati-supported and sustainable brand, at the Mall of the Emirates, from November 29th to December 2th.
In partnership with the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, a foundation which helps foster market opportunities for local artisans , the luxury retailer will offer a wide selection of so-called ‘Sougha’ products—a word that refers to the gift a traveler brings home to his family— handmade by over 200 artisans from the U.A.E.
“The Sougha brand has gained wide market recognition for its ‘made in the U.A.E’ products, with socio-economic impact,” explained Mouza Obaid, Sougha Managing Director. “We are proud of our partnership with Harvey Nichols Dubai this season, and have prepared a special trendy collection for the department store.”
Sougha artisans used traditional Bedouin weaving techniques and developed prints which are inspired from designs found on old Bedouin tents. Among the various crafts, they introduce traditional Khouss and Sadou techniques. The former refers to the weaving of palm leafs, used for the making of baskets and dishes; the latter refers to handmade woolen materials using traditional Emirati looms.
The Sougha products on sale include Khouss beach bags, Sadou woven table runners, local incense, scented candles, and other hand-woven accessories created by the Sougha artisans.
