Berber Women of Morocco Celebrated in Paris

Under the patronage of His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, the Fondation Pierre Bergé—Yves Saint Laurent is hosting its 21st exhibition entitled Berber Women of Morocco until July 20th in Paris.

For this particular exhibition honoring Berber women and celebrating Pierre Bergé’s and the late Yves Saint Laurent’s love of Morocco—both were avid Berber art collectors and lived in Marrakech in the 1970s—the foundation recreated the spirit of Marrakech’s Berber Museum at the Jardin Majorelle.

“The majority of the objects at this exhibition come from the Museum,” Bergé explained in an official release. “I have asked that the exhibition be consecrated to Berber women because most of the objects concern them. And also because of the vital role that Berber women play in the transmission of their cultural identity: the language, the skills, and the education of the children.”

The exhibition explores the beauty of Amazigh (the Berber of Morocco) culture and craftsmanship and puts traditional weaving, jewelry, pottery, and basketry on display, next to an in-depth historical analysis of Berber women via various installations of texts, maps, and projected images.

In addition to the exhibition, the foundation has organized several conferences which are open to the public, such as a talk with Björn Dahlström, Curator of the Berber Museum of the Jardin Majorelle, on May 6th; a conference on “Berber Encounters” with artist Titouan Lamazou on June 3rd; and a conference on Berber jewelry and adornments with Amazigh art expert Sarah Assidon-Pinson on June 26th.
