Kudos to fashion house Fendi for announcing that it will pledge millions to finance the four-year restoration project of Rome’s beloved Trevi Fountain to be followed by a significant contribution to the restoration of the Four Fountains, also located in central Rome. Few whom have traveled to Rome have not paid a visit to the Fountain and thrown in a penny with the hopes of returning to the Eternal City.
The Trevi Fountain was based on the design of Architect Nicola Salvi after a competition was launched by Pope Clement XII in 1732. Lush, with marble plants, crops, a wide basin, and spectacular water flow, the central niche features Oceanus, a personification of the forces of nature.
Fendi will also publish a coffee table book devoted to Rome’s hidden fountains shot by Karl Lagerfeld, Fendi’s Creative Director. Women’s Wear Daily has reported that the climax of the project might be a fashion show in front of the Trevi Fountain in 2015, also the year Fendi will celebrate its 90th anniversary.
