Bahraini designer Hind Matar, behind the label Matar, introduces her debut jewelry line in collaboration with London-based jewelry brand Noemi Klein exclusively today on Style.com/Arabia. The 2015 Fashion Prize finalist and winner of the Cadillac Design Challenge’s debut release features abstract jewelry pieces that include a mixed-metal caged choker necklace and cuff that reference the works of Paul Klee—a Swiss-German painter who is known for his abstract drawings that are influenced by expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. “We came up with the initial designs after examining the main ideas that inspired the [Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear] collection: notions of playfulness that manifest in organic knots and twists in the fabric. Our main reference point was the abstract, sketch-like quality of Paul Klee’s drawings,” Matar added.
Included in the jewelry collection is a twisted bracelet and set of earrings cast in metal and plated in silver and gold, which boost the luxurious, contemporary feel throughout the line. Rounding out the offering is a silver and 22-karat gold orb cocktail ring set with pyrite that draws inspiration from ancient Mesopotamian heritage jewelry.
Matar explained to Style.com/Arabia that she had been thinking about designing her own jewelry line for some time, “I have always loved wearing statement jewelry and wanted to design a selection of fine jewelry statement pieces that build upon and encapsulate the main features of the [ready-to-wear] collection.” She also added that she had been following Klein’s work for the last couple of years, which ultimately led to this collaboration, “Collaborating with Noemi was an obvious choice for me because I am drawn to the chaos and order in her work.”
