Dubai’s New State-of-the-Art Opera House

Forget about traditional opera houses: a stage, an orchestra, and seatings are not enough—at least not in Dubai.

Emaar Properties recently confirmed the construction of a state-of-the-art opera venue called Dubai Opera, in The Opera District in Downtown Dubai. The new building will hold up to 2,000 people and will stage operas, theater shows, and concerts, alongside other exhibitions and art performances.

The design of the multi-purpose venue is based on Arabian sailing ships—the classic wooden dhows. The “bow” of the venue will comprise a main stage, orchestra, and seating areas, while the elongated “hull” will host waiting areas for spectators and parking. The new venue will also feature a sky garden and rooftop restaurant.

“With the city establishing its global reputation as an arts hub, the new development will energize Dubai’s events and tourism sectors and also strengthen the ‘Dubai Art Season,’ which brings together the city’s vibrant arts initiatives,” stated Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties in an official release. Alabbar also mentioned that The Opera District will feature luxury hotels, residential and serviced apartments, a retail area, and other recreational spaces such as parks and promenades.

As of today, the project is under construction and no official launch date has been announced.
