Following a DDFC-facilitated internship with Roland Mouret, Bouguessa designer Faiza Bouguessa made an effort to get even closer to the wants of her clientele that wishes to dress modestly in clothes that maintain a contemporary appeal. “I take international trends and apply them to the abayas so that modest-dressing women can visibly be a part of the international fashion conversation,” Bouguessa explained to Style.com/Arabia following her presentation at the Dubai Collections. Her Fall 2016 collection featured covetable velvet robe overlays in dark emerald green, deep blue, and ink black. Other looks nodded to the pajama trend with long tunics featuring buttons, pocket details, and neat trims.
But apart from translating trends, Bouguessa also motioned that she is eager to flex her design skills. To wit: a graphic monochrome abaya was a successful experiment of shape and volume; a black abaya featured inserted pleated chiffon panels in the skirt that were revealed when the model moved; and a softly cocooned overlay made entirely with chiffon crepe blurred the lines of her target market for modest dressing. Indeed, wrapping oneself in luxurious materials can offer a quiet comfort in an increasingly uncomfortable world.
